Honesty

This should be a great opportunity to experience work as a "real engineer" and have a real working internship like experience. Like most things in life you will get out of it what you are willing to put it into it. We are requiring you to work six hours each week and to turn in time and effort reports to your graduate mentor. This will hopefully help hold you accountable, and we also expect that team members will help hold each other accountable, but there may be opportunity to "cheat" on your time and effort just as in real life there are many ways to subtly cheat your employer. Begin to practice now the kind of integrity you plan to carry with you into the workplace by being strictly honest with your time. If you do not put in the time then DO NOT record the hours. Further, our BYU Honor Code demands this kind of academic honesty and any who are caught in violoation will face penalties.

Computers

We will be able to use the computer lab in 270 Fletcher building as a working area and place to gather. While this lab will be primarily designated for students in the capstone class, we are sharing it with others in the department so be respectful of its use.

Research Participation

A graduate student is researching ways to improve and evaluate student team work and will be performing some group evaluations for which permission to use results is required.  You will be asked to sign a disclaimer/waiver that stipulates it is ok to use the results according to the following policy:

"The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Brigham Young University have a dual teaching and research mission. As such, the exercises in which you will participate in this class, (including the grades assigned to them), will not only form an integral part of the lessons which you will learn, they may also be used to aid in the further development and improvement of the curriculum of this class, as well as for other research purposes. You will always be made aware beforehand of the activities that will be used for this research and development, and you have the right to remove your particular responses from the data set. If you do not want your outcomes from any exercise used for research purposes, please notify the instructor. Be assured that only aggregate statistical information would ever be published and that complete anonymity and/or confidentiality is guaranteed.

If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant you may contact the IRB Administrator at A-285 ASB, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602; irb@byu.edu; (801) 422-1461. The IRB is a group of people who review research studies to protect the rights and welfare of research participants."
